Friday 19th October
On the country's 60th birthday (as on its 20th and 30th anniversaries), an embattled military regime is fighting for its survival.
There is a war on its western frontier, while at home it is being tormented by jihadis and judges.
None of this seemed to make much difference to the young men on motorbikes who took over the streets of Lahore in their annual suicide race...![]()
Anybody as confused as I am by what exactly is going on in Pakistan these days should hie themselves to the trusty London Review of Books and a masterful (and very readable) account of recent history by no less than Tariq Ali.
(It's the same issue as the now-notorious Diary piece about the McCanns by Anne Enright, written before she was catapulted to fame (fame?) upon winning the Booker Prize; nice to have it online and to be able to compare it with the vituperative summaries presented by the popular press - I just hope this doesn't mean everybody and his aunt will now start resorting to the LRB to fill up their blogs...)

Wednesday 17th October
I have written before, I think, of how the inevitable spread of a blog's readership from just a few close friends to begin with to God-knows-who at its peak (and then, ahem, back to a few close friends as posting becomes more erratic) is mirrored in the contents of the blog which become, inevitably, less intimate with time.
So you would not expect to hear me tell you of the exact nature of my quasi-sexual relationship with a nice young man from Irkutsk recently.
Or should that be a nice young man in Irkutsk? Yes, I think it should.
(You can write your own limerick.)
