"Skim milk?" he asks, and she nods and smiles, adding "Extremely hot!"

There's a nano-pause before he bats an eyelid and replies "Just like you!"

Then it's my turn, and he says "Skinny latte, extra shot?" and, before I can say anything, he adds, "It will just be one moment: I need to get some more skim milk."

"I'll take ordinary; I'm not bothered," I say and he says ok, and reaches for the milk as I smile, and add, "Extremely hot!"

And he looks down, and frowns at his little metal jug, and looks a little confused, and looks back up, and says, "I'm afraid no, it's not very hot."

And I grin, and say, "Just like me?"

And he has the grace to grin back, and slap me lightly on the wrist.

I think I might be a little late in coming to this particular piece of argot, but thanks to this web-page, I now know what to say the next time some stranger casually enquires: "Are you down?"

"Oh baby: I'm so in, I'm out."

Enough with the rain already, I hear you cry. And I don't disagree.

Sometime before the end of this month I shall, only slightly against my better judgement, be signing a contract with my current employer, forsaking my casual status in return for shedloads of cash. (Passive aggression turns out to work surprisingly well as an employment negotiation tactic, it transpires.)

So it makes a certain kind of sense to take myself out of the rota for a few days before then, the last chance I have to luxuriate in my can't-make-me-work status before full dronehood sets in.

Hence, I have six whole days (count 'em) of not having to worry about whether I'm fit for purpose, fully alert, not terminally hungover, shaven and vaguely clean. Bring it on.

And, whilst you're bringing it on, some sunshine too, if you please.

(Speaking of letting a little more light in, I'm taking this opportunity to increase the size of the photographs on Blogadoon by 25%; I hope that doesn't rain on your parade.)
