*'Electrifying' is an overworked word in the critical lexicon, but if ever a show deserved it, it is Trevor Nunn's magnificent revival of the Gershwins' Porgy and Bess...I did not think that anything could make me happier this week than the resignation of Donald Rumsfeld, but this Porgy and Bess has managed to do so. Truly, we are living through interesting times.*

My birthday passed very pleasantly, as it turned out.

There were no fireworks - none that I saw, at any rate, though plenty to be heard - just a very mellow gathering of friends. Of the fifty or so whose email addresses I could find at short notice, some twenty turned up; forty per cent turnout under those circumstances is pretty respectable, I think (so that's Birthday Motive One sorted: people love me, check).

I'd clearly stated a No-Cards-No-Presents policy (like really, who needs them?) so all that the rest of the bar could see was a succession of attractive intelligent people appearing delighted to have found me: Birthday Motive Two: be fabulous, check.

On a whim, and although the two worlds don't mix much, I'd invited a few people from the office, two of whom turned up and seemed to have a great time: titillated to exactly the right degree by Horse Meat's random acts of mild degeneracy (up to and including Booby's sudden reincarnation as a Guy) but spared the embarassment of looking-not-looking at Naked Man whom we didn't see (although an empty pile of clothes was spotted in a corner later in the evening). Birthday Motive Three: entertain and be entertained, check.

And a friend from another sphere, gay but not one of nature's club-freaks, also took the trouble to appear, and to appear to enjoy himself. Birthday Motive Four: toy with fresh perspectives, check.

My thanks to everybody who made it such a nice evening. I rolled out and into a cab around 2am. Birthday Motive Five: drunk, but not blind drunk, check.
