One of the few good things about middle age, for me at least, is the way the emotional weather calms: I get depressed very rarely these days.Angry yes. Less-than-happy certainly. But never really sad in that No Fucker Loves Me kinda way I did when I was younger.

On the other hand, you might argue, I have very little to be depressed about: I have an adequately challenging job, enough money to get by on, a secure roof over my head, more friends than you can shake a stick at. Plus: no boyfriend to play tunes on my head. (Not yet, at any rate.)

If I was going to get depressed, of course, round about now would be the time to do it.In a recent survey asking people to rank the distress levels involved in returning to work, three out of four nominated the New Year as the toughest, citing depleted wallets, the prospect of three months of sun deprivation, and weight gain over Christmas. (I actually made money over Christmas, but hey.)

Cliff Arnall, from Cardiff University, annually calculates the saddest day of the year using the formula W+(D-d)]xTQMNa to co-relate weather, debt, motivation and (somewhat foreign concept) 'the need to take action'.

This year he's nominated January 23rd.Don't say you weren't warned.

Shoving single photographs into Blogadoon once or twice a week seems, to me, quite a good way of lightening the text-load - especially when I can find an image that seems either seasonal or topical.

Above and beyond these individual pictures, there lurks a vast hinterland of stuff that nobody would usually see, either because - though possibly of interest to certain subsets of my readership - they're not quite good enough, or because they're part of a series of snaps that I can't be fagged to write an html page for.

So, as the sharper-eyed amongst you (hardly a statistically significant sample) will have deduced from a recent addition to the links-list at left, I have finally opened an account with Flickr.

Of all the headlines which we denied ourselves for stories about the head of the Lib Dems claiming to have overcome his alcohol problems whilst simultaneously calling a snap election for the leadership of his party, the one of which I am most proud is probably: Kennedy loses his bottle

Oh, now I remember: this is that time of year when you can't get a single soul to come out and have a drink with you because they're all, each and every one of them, 'having a bit of a detox'.

Bah.

(I wonder if the invention of the concept of detox is single-handedly responsible for the decline of the New Year Resolution?)

*Monday 2nd January

*Grad school: I'm crossing every finger and every toe that it will work out, because I think I've found the right place to be, a program where I can go type-crazy without all the other stuff I'd have to deal with in other design programs. I'm off to Reading, England, in a couple of weeks to check it out. If they like me, I like them, and Sallie Mae has some money for me, I'm hoping to be an expat student living abroad before the year is out.*

Exciting news from anyone, but coming from Sparky, delightful.
