*Parliament must not allow itself to be misled a second time into accepting that the real issue is whether one BBC interview (at seven minutes past six in the morning!) was wrong.

*Tony Blair told Hutton that this interview was so damaging it brought into question 'the credibility of the whole country'...

*From my contacts with European and Arab friends, I know that what has seriously damaged the credibility of my country is that its government launched a war, in which at least 10,000 were killed, on a false prospectus.*

- from an op-ed piece in this morning's Independent by Robin Cook, the man who, two years ago, was Tony Blair's Foreign Secretary.

Attention, visitors to our shores!

For reasons that will become clear, assorted easily-amused assholes may, at some time today, seek to belittle you by enquiring as to the date of the Act of Union.

Courtesy of Blogadoon, you may reply: "Assuming you refer to the legislation that created the Parliament of the Kingdom of Great Britain, I believe you'll find that, given that said eponymous conjuncture required an act to be passed by both the Scottish and English parliaments, the correct term should be the Acts, plural, of Union - both of which became law on 26 March 1707.

"If you're talking about the last time you had a shag, however...sometime later than that. Probably."

Whilst I was walking home at 8am the other morning (for reasons that need concern no-one but myself and one other), southward down the sharp curve of City Road, a middle-aged black lady stopped me at the Old Street roundabout to enquire as to the location of Moorfields Eye Hospital.

"Sure," I heard myself say, "It's right over there, just round the bend, the big building that you can't see..."

As friends will tell you, my grasp of times and dates is hazy at best. But you'd think it would be easy enough to correctly dateline an entry celebrating the first day of a new month.

Alas no: as eagle-eyed Blogadoonistas will have noticed, yesterday confidently declared itself...Monday 30th August 2003.

*Monday 1st September 2003

For the first time probably ever, I actually managed to make the first words out of my mouth today a ritual celebration of the dawning of the first of the month.

Sadly however, the words that came out were not White Rabbits but Pinch and a Punch - so I'm not too optimistic about the next 30 days.
